Story Quest “Desperately Seeking Emma” is a tutorial (How to survive in HELL-A 101) quest that will take you through Swanson’s Mansion and show you the basics of what you need to know, find, and get in order to survive in Dead Island 2.
※ Dead Island 2 has a reputation for being the ultimate in gore and horror. If you don’t want to see that, please, don’t read this article.
📢Steam version: As of June 7, 2024
Epic accounts were able to receive the Gold Edition rewards Banoi Baseball Bat and Banoi War Club. However, they have been removed from the Steam version.

🗺️ Maps
In the game, you can use a map to find information about your surroundings, but there’s a site called MapGenie that lets you use in-game maps to find what you’re looking for.
🗺️ MapGenie
Membership is not required, but signing up gives you access to game progress and the ability to share certain information.
The screenshot below shows the location of a disaster relief crate, fuse box, maglock door & panel, etc. on the MapGenie site.
🪫 Where is Circuit Breaker?
Since this is one of the early tutorials, when you investigate the circuit breaker, it directs you to the garage where the current breaker is located. Just follow the directions and you should be fine.
🚪 Door: Opens from the other side
In this way, doors that only open in one direction, when you can go in the opposite direction, can be left open to help you move quickly.
🔒 Maglock Doors
It’s early in the game, so you can kick it and it will break.
Break the maglock to open the door to the panic room ahead.
However, there are a number of different locks going forward, see the article below for how to unlock each one.
💳 Swanson’s Mansion Keycard
※ The following is from a game. Please do not associate it with real-world crime and financing.
After defeating Mr. Swanson, you’ll get the keycard to the mansion.
If you get a keycard, a key, and a note with the password, you’re ready to open the door.
Earn loots and take money from the Safe.
💵 Financing in Dead island 2
When I wrote about how to play this game before, I wrote about the importance of gathering loots, but no, you can get loots any way you want, but the hardest part is always financing.
It’s a game where the world has ended and you don’t know who the hell is getting paid, but you need lots of money to level up your weapons(match level).
Just as it’s important to get and sell weapons from the Disaster Relief Crates, which you can get repeatedly by traveling to different areas at the start of each new quest, it’s also important to get cash from safes, suitcases, or vehicles that have cash in them.
So, when you’re looking for information on Mapgenie, look for information on safes with cash in them.
🚨 Alarms
This is your most powerful weapon at this point. It’s secured, so breaking the glass will set off an alarm and release three zombies, so look around before you break it, and the one labeled “SOTL” in the screenshot below is the alarm.
If you see an alarm or that device, smash it to get the loot.
If you just want to hit it and grab it, you can leave it alone.
🧰 Disaster Relief Crate
If you look upstairs, you’ll find a red box inside a private sauna facility on the other side of the destination. This is a Disaster Relief Crate, and it will contain an appropriate weapon based on your level.
Collecting just the weapons from the Disaster Relief Crates in each area will go a long way in helping you earn money by collecting and selling weapons.
The links below summarize the locations of each of Bell-Air’s disaster relief crates.
⚔️ Swiching weapons
You can select a weapon by pressing the middle mouse button or the B key to select the weapon you want to use and any spare weapons you have.
☣️ When you open a closed door!
Most of the time, it’s a game that defaults to attacking you as soon as you open it, like in the screenshot below, so if you open it to the side, you won’t have to struggle to shake off those nasty little buggers.
🔢 Back Gate Code
(A note from the kitchen: by the refrigerator)
On the back door security keypad, you see a note about the back gate and that it was left in the kitchen.
The note is attached to the cabinet next to the open refrigerator.
🔋 Battery Generators
There are zombies in the pool.
And there’s a battery generator. If you throw this battery into the pool, you can defeat the zombies right now, but the next time you pass by here, there will be more zombies, so you might want to plug the battery into the generator like in the screenshot below.
This will continuously power the pool and any zombies that enter the pool will die almost immediately.
You can also use it later to lure strong zombies into the pool to defeat them.
Now go to Emma’s mansion, watch the cutscene, and move on to the next quest.
